Cement-based grout or epoxy: when is each the right choice?

A cement-based grout is, in many cases, the technically correct solution when epoxy is not necessary.

The choice between cement-based grout and epoxy grout should always be based on the actual service conditions. Epoxy is a strong specialist solution, but that does not mean it is the right choice for every project.

In many wet rooms, changing rooms, technical rooms and light industrial environments, a cement-based grouting solution will be both technically correct and reliable in operation. With Alfix IndustryFuge combined with Alfix FugeBinder, you get a robust solution with high abrasion resistance for areas where durability and everyday performance are required, but where the service conditions do not necessarily call for the special properties of epoxy.

The right grout choice is therefore not about choosing the most specialized solution. It is about choosing the solution that matches the specific application.

When is cement-based grout the right choice?

A cement-based grout is often the obvious choice in areas where the joints are exposed to moisture, cleaning and daily wear, but not to high chemical exposure.

This typically applies to:

• wet rooms
• changing rooms
• technical rooms
• light industrial environments
• service areas with normal mechanical exposure

In these environments, there is a need for a grout that performs reliably in daily use and contributes to a robust ceramic solution. In many cases, a cement-based grout will provide the right balance between strength, function and practical usability.

Advantages of a cement-based solution

With Alfix IndustryFuge and Alfix FugeBinder, you get a cement-based grouting solution with enhanced properties for areas subject to daily use.

The solution is suitable where there is a need for:

• high abrasion resistance in daily use
• reliable day-to-day performance
• a technically documented and well-proven solution
• a strong solution for wet rooms and less demanding industrial environments

This makes the solution relevant in projects where high functionality and reliable operation are required, but where epoxy would be more than the task demands.

When should you choose epoxy?

Epoxy grout is the right choice in areas with particularly high requirements for chemical resistance, water tightness and hygiene.

This especially applies where the joints are exposed to:

• high chemical exposure
• aggressive cleaning agents
• strict hygiene requirements
• intensive industrial loads

In areas where the operating conditions place special demands on the grout’s water tightness, resistance and ease of cleaning, epoxy may be the necessary solution to ensure both durability and stable day-to-day performance.

In these environments, epoxy has clear advantages. However, if these service conditions are not present, epoxy is not necessarily the most appropriate solution. The choice should always be based on a specific assessment of the application, exposure and requirements of the individual project.

Choose grout according to exposure

A technically correct grouting solution is based on the actual operating conditions. If the area is not exposed to severe chemical attack or special hygiene requirements, a cement-based grout will often be the right choice.

Fredrik strengthens Alfix in Sweden

Technical consultancy close to customers and the realities of the construction site

Over the past two years, Fredrik has worked closely with Alfix’s customers in Sweden, including both distributors and contractors. As a Technical Consultant in the Stockholm-Mälardalen area, he helps ensure that solutions do not just work in theory, but also in practice on the construction site.

Solutions focused on functionality and quality

For Fredrik, it is important that technical consultancy is based on the specific task and the actual conditions on site. At Alfix, the focus is on developing project-specific solutions where functionality, quality and usability go hand in hand.

“At Alfix, we can develop project-specific solutions with a focus on functionality and on what actually works on site. We do not compromise on quality.”

Adapting into a changing market

One of the things that has surprised Fredrik most since joining Alfix is the company’s ability to navigate a market that is constantly evolving. Customer expectations are changing, environmental requirements are becoming stricter, and the demands placed on products and systems are increasing.

“Even so, Alfix succeeds in adapting effectively without losing sight of the long-term perspective,” says Fredrik.

“A market that is constantly changing requires a willingness to adapt, whether it concerns customer expectations for products, environmental requirements or systems, and Alfix does this very effectively. We have a long-term strategy, and that creates confidence in our work.”

Meet Mia - Our New Sales and Marketing Coordinator

Since February 2026, Mia has been part of Alfix as our Sales and Marketing Coordinator. In this role, she has taken on a varied position with responsibility for both marketing, communication, and support for the internal sales team.

With tasks including social media, website content, printed materials, packaging design, order processing, and customer service, Mia has become part of a working day where collaboration, responsibility, and variety go hand in hand.

A broad role with responsibility

Mia applied for the position at Alfix because she was drawn to the combination of a broad marketing role and Alfix’s values as a family-owned company. The opportunity to take on responsibility and work across multiple areas was one of the things that caught her interest.

Today, Mia works across large parts of the marketing area, from content for social media and the website to graphic materials, print, and packaging. At the same time, she supports the internal sales team with order processing and customer service whenever needed.

For Mia, it is especially the varied nature of the workday and the broad range of contacts across the organization that make the job exciting.

“No two days are ever the same, and that is exactly what I love. There are many different tasks, and there is always something to get involved in.”

A strong culture from day one

One of the things that has made the biggest impression on Mia during her first time at Alfix is the company culture and the way she was welcomed.

“You are made to feel incredibly welcome. Everyone greets each other, helps each other, and you quickly feel like part of the family.”

At Alfix, we are delighted to have Mia on the team and look forward to our continued collaboration.

A little about Mia

In her private life, Mia lives in Christiansfeld with her partner and their son, who is one and a half years old. When she is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her family and with her horse, which gives her space to unwind. She also enjoys exploring second-hand shops, watching a good movie, and relaxing with a cup of coffee. And if she gets to choose, she is always happy to skip straight to dessert.

Mia describes herself as a happy and active person who values great experiences, exercise, creative details, and time with the people she cares about.
